Writing Creative Non-Fiction

How to avoid making trade union history seem dry

It's been almost a year since I attended Nottingham Trent Uni's 'Writing Creative Non-Fiction' course and it remains one of the most rewarding learning experiences of my life.

I was worried I'd be in the wrong place and look stupid but, delivered by the brilliant Carol Adlam, I loved it. Never somebody who feels able to 'express themselves', it was a revelation. I knew I wanted to write a book that was readable to all (kind of like Simon Winchester's books) and avoid anything 'academic' but I didn't have a clue how to do it until that week.

At some point I'll try and write down my thoughts on how I get the balance of the book right. So, not too formal and yet isn't hated by academics! Check out Carol's website for details of her amazing work: https://www.caroladlam.co.uk
