The extraordinary life of Arthur Henderson
Whilst reading Clive Griggs' fabulous, 'The Trades Union Congress & The Struggle for Education 1868 - 1925', I was amused by the facts surrounding him taking on the President of the Board of Education in 1915.
An extraordinary man, who started work at 12 in an Iron Foundry, he later became active in his union and then the TUC. By becoming President of the Board of Education, Griggs points out he was the first: • Trade Unionist as President of the Board of Education
• President to have experienced an elementary school as a pupil
• Exec member of the Labour party as President of the Board
And.... the first President to refuse a deputation from the TUC!
